Foreword

Starting from 2022, there has been an intensification of the transfer in the textile and clothing industry,
reflecting the new situation of low export demand and high domestic demand.

  • In early 2022, the retail giant Walmart wanted to customize over 50,000 uniforms. Traditionally, this order would have been given to Chinese suppliers, but it was eventually awarded to the family-owned clothing company Preslow in Mexico, leading to industry concerns about "another wolf in the nearshore market."
  • Lululemon, which has been performing strongly, reported a 49.8% year-on-year increase in inventory, reaching an astonishing $1.447 billion in 2022.
  • Export-oriented economies like South Korea and Vietnam, which serve as typical indicators of global manufacturing demand, have experienced continuous declines in exports in recent months. In April 2023, due to a decline in international orders, Vietnam's Baoyuan Shoe Factory plans to lay off nearly 6,000 employees.
  • In the domestic market, since July 2021, the growth rate of clothing retail has surpassed that of general consumer goods retail, showing a significant recovery trend. The growth rate of online clothing retail has also surpassed that of physical goods online retail since October 2021.
